Why I Listen to Christian Radio

The title of this post is a bit too narrow to encompass everything I do to stay on top of the culture where I live. As a passionately indifferent atheist, I listen to Christian radio (sermons, music, etc), read blogs of amiable and thoughtful Christians, and pretty much read and listen to anything where the material is educational, rather than political or sensational in nature.

Recently, I stopped following the Religious Right Wing as closely as I had been. Bryan Fischer, Kevin Swanson, et al. Essentially, my reading and listening used to be a listing of those people that Right Wing Watch copiously kept track of. I stopped because I got tired.

Think of it like programming, my day job:

You're writing a program, using a high level code language to do so. Everything you use in that language is so abstracted from the actual internal logic of doing the dirty work. Sorting functions are used instead of writing a sorting algorithm. Collection objects are fondled and loved, instead of writing code to handle every edge condition when accessing an array or some other basic non-trivial programming construct.

Then, something bad happens. You work for days, trying to discover the bug in your code. You Google incessantly, post ad nauseum to Stack Overflow, even go as far as putting your code out on Facebook and begging your barista friend to pretend he knows something about code and humor you by looking it over. Then someone says the obvious: RTFM.

That stands for "Read The F*cking Manual," something not done much these days, being that the intelligence of a programmer's Integrated Development Environments are legen - wait for it - dary. Nobody codes in Notepad anymore, and if they do, you wouldn't know them anyway, because they're introverted hermits, living in their grandmother's basement, hidden from all government spies, scheming to take over the world.

Reading the manual then opens the programmer's eyes to the foundational concepts behind the high level coding language. As you read, there will be more than a few "AHA!" moments, and you may happen across the reason behind your bug.

Or, one day, your code just begins to work - but we won't talk about those days.

And that is pretty much why I care to keep my mind up to date with the foundational theology of Christianity, a huge component of our American and especially western culture, historically.

But mostly, I have six kids. These kids ask a lot of questions, something I did when I was a child, and yet I was spoon-fed one-sided ideas (high level ideas, based on the foundational reasoning of Christian thought), rather than given the basic building blocks for making sound, life defining decisions.

In short, I have put it upon myself to stay fresh, so that, if I say, "Free will is impossible because God cannot be omniscient and control the hearts of kings at the same time," and my kids ask, "Why, Daddy?" I can give them a really good answer.

Also, they've almost graduated from asking questions like, "Daddy, does God fart?"

Hint: I know the answer to THAT one.

Where is God when most people die in their sins?

This video recently came to my attention when Bryan Fischer spoke about it on the air a few days ago. I watched it and couldn't help feeling a welling up of...rage?  I'm not sure if rage is the correct word.  Maybe I confused my eyebrows hitting the ceiling with an audible "WTF!" with seething hot anger.  I'm not sure, but nonetheless, my raw emotion got the better of me.

The story goes like this:

Dude drives to work, has a heart attack.  Drives himself to the hospital.  Passes out in the waiting room.  Docs and nurses try for 45 minutes to revive him to no avail.  The head doctor walks out of the room and hears a voice in his head telling him to go back and pray for the poor dead sap.  He does (reluctantly) and prays the following prayer:
"Lord, if this man has not asked Jesus to be his personal Lord and Savior, please bring him back to life."
Then, he orders one more paddle zap and BOOM!...dude wakes up, spends a few days in the ICU, and voila, is healthy as a clam - nary a sign of heart damage to be found aye, now or ever.

It's a sweet story, and one that many Christians would find fascinating and "proof" that their god raises people from the dead, as was the conclusion by Bryan Fischer.

Whether or not their god does in fact raise people from the dead (which I highly doubt, especially in this case, being that empirical research could easily explain why a perfectly explainable course of events caused this "miracle" to take place...I mean...it's not like the bloke just POOF! came alive again.  They used the paddle zappers, after all) doesn't matter to me one bit.

What bothers me is that this man received unfair treatment by a god who is preached from the pulpit as an all-powerful, albeit hands off, being, who has given mankind the free will to choose god or...not god...and, if they choose the latter, they get to burn in hell for eternity.

If this is the case, why does this gentleman get a second chance while millions, yea billions, of deserving souls have only one chance to make their decision and yet die in their sins?

If this story is remotely true (which it isn't, of course), then this free will idea is bullshit.  There is no free will.  If there was, every single burning soul could come forward with a case against this god with a simple question:

"Where in the hell was my doctor to pray me alive again?"

...to which god would obviously reply:

"Who put you in charge of the rules of my kingdom?  Did I ever say I was fair?  After all, my cause and effect eternal promises never work anyway - paving the way for millions of clauses that trick people into believing that I am still relevant."

No.  This story is poppycock.  And if it isn't, I want nothing to do with a god that will work overtime to save this poor bloke, whilst giving my grandfather exactly one life to decide to burn in hell, which this god is happy to oblige him.

Oh...and why does god need some idiot to beg him to raise some dude from the dead.  Hell...if I had all the power in the world, why do I need to go through a surrogate?  If this doctor hadn't had "faith" and played this god's little game, would we have a YouTube video of the dead guy that never came alive again?

Bryan Fischer: "Heterosexuality is a Choice"

Yes.  I know he said homosexuality was a choice, but his argument logically leads to my conclusion that he should also believe that heterosexuality is a choice.  After all, if a homosexual's selective process for picking sexual partners proves that homosexuality is a choice, then the same for heterosexuality.

Okay, okay.  I might be wrong.  When I met Kristine, she forced me to marry her.  It's been a miserable 11.5 years.  Pretty sure all other heterosexuals are forced into their marriages by no fault of their own selective process.  We're all mindless robots, grabbing the first sexual partner that comes across our unassuming nakedness and is thus compelled to sleep with us.

Ah, the world through Fischer's eyes.

And, for the record, I am the happiest man in the world, with my wife.  Just to be sure you didn't catch the dry sarcasm.

Watch Fischer blow hot air....

Edit, 5/1/2013 10:30 AM CST:

To me, whether or not homosexuality is a choice is as important as whether my fellow employees in my office like potato chips rather than Doritos.  Who gives a sh*t!  You are who you are, regardless of how you got there.  The argument that we MUST find a gay gene to silence the opposition is simpleton foolishness.  That side cares nothing about science anyway and actually thinks the game is rigged.  Worse, they will simply attribute it to "the fall of man" or "the curse of Eve" (remember, it's Eve's fault we are in this sinful mess, in the first place... if only Adam had kept that damn woman in line...geez!!!).

Enough already.  So you're gay.  Nice.  Oh!  Lesbian!?  Sweet!  Well.... I love chocolate cake, despise chocolate ice cream, and my genetic make-up requires me to drink coffee.  It's all a bunch of head fakey bullshit.

Wherein Bryan Fischer Messes Up

Recently, my boy, Bryan Fischer (okay...not 'my boy'...he'd probably shoot me on sight, but I like to pretend that I can piss him off a bit by calling him a pet name) got all excited about a correlation he felt was reasonable, where he excitedly stated a perceived inconsistency between President Obama's hesitation to let his own hypothetical son play football and sending "your daughters" to get "shot to pieces" on the front lines of battle.

You can watch it here...

While it makes for great radio, Bryan Fischer gets it all wrong.

First, President Obama lending his support behind the Defense Department's abandoning most bans on women fighting in battle is not akin to forcing "your daughters" to go and get "shot to pieces" on the front lines. Last I checked, the military was still a volunteer organization.  If you sign up, male or female, I think an individual who doesn't expect to be put in harm's way, isn't really well versed on what the military does.  If you are allowed in combat positions, you get to shoot people and, in turn, they get to shoot at you - man or woman.

So.  Let's recap.

1. A woman can volunteer for military service.
2. A man can volunteer for military service.
3. Bullets do not discriminate by gender.  Both men and women on the front lines can be "shot to pieces".
4. Signing up for the military is largely the decision of the woman.  No father is being forced to send his daughter to war.
5. Why isn't it a tragedy that we send men to the front lines to be shot to pieces?

Second (and arguably a more important point), Bryan Fischer never asked President Obama how he would feel about his own daughters going into the military.

Military service is a tough sell to any parent.  Some are honored by it, seeing it as a tradition in their family, a sort of stepping stone to adulthood.  Others see it as a bounded choice.  They can't get a job, see no way of going to college, and end up deciding on the military.  There are other scenarios that bring a young man or a young woman into a recruitment office, ending up signing on the dotted line.  But, as a father myself, I don't think that any mother or father would not think about the potential deadly ramifications of military service.  Many welcome it while fearing it.  Others weep, while hugging their child, who is now an independent adult.

Again, Bryan Fischer did not ask President Obama about how he felt about his daughters going to war.

And the final point (arguably, the most important).  Women have been clamoring for...what's that word?  Hmmm...  Let me see.  Oh yeah!  That word that Bryan Fischer and his ilk yelled from the mountaintops during the Affordable Health Care Act (better known as Obama Care) debate.  What was it again.  Fr...hmmm...freed....dammit...it's not coming to me.  Oh yeah!

FREEDOM!!!!

Yes.  That's exactly what this is about.  Independent women who desire the CHOICE to be able to say, "I got this!  I'm going to sign up for military service and fight in battle."

Yeah.  That freedom.  They have been asking for it for many years.  The military granted THEIR wish.  Now, these women have the opportunity to sign up for it or decide against it (which many will).

It's time for old white men who think they know everything that a woman is supposed to do, to shut up and let women make their own decisions, no matter how stupid they think they are.  After all, most of the doomsday crap they scream from behind their bully pulpits never comes to pass.  They simply rely on the short memories of their followers.

Are All Gays Pedophiles?

Bryan Fischer sure thinks so.

Really, Bryan?  So, what you're saying is, if a man is identified by his sexual preference as "gay", he is more likely to be a pedophile toward boys he is in charge of?

Bryan.  Would you say the same about heterosexual men, overseeing a crowd of girls?

I doubt it.  You would probably fight for their right to show self-control and be...er...real adults, saving their sexual exploits for consenting adults.

More Opportunities for Women and Gays Means Military Will Fail?

I frankly don't understand the logic here. It baffles me to no end that you open up opportunities for women and gays and BOOM!...people stop volunteering for the military?

Um...huh? Me thinks Bryan Fischer is a moron. Oh wait...we already knew that.
